The Research Manager plans, develops, manages, coordinates, and implements high-quality research plans and investigations, which stand as one of Pantau Gambut's main products.
Reporting directly to the National Coordinator, this role develops and implements effective, efficient, and timely research strategies. This involves conceptualization, planning, data collection, field verification, analysis, and writing, all integrated with Pantau Gambut's overall vision and mission. The research results will then serve as crucial material for advocacy and organizational campaigns, and will bolster Pantau Gambut's broader agenda and goals at local, national, and international levels.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership Strategy
- Build, manage, and develop a high-quality, well-structured, effective, and efficient research department to advance Pantau Gambut's agenda and support its overall vision and mission.
- Identify opportunities, design, develop, implement, and evaluate research programs and databases that deliver high-quality, large-scale, and impactful results.
- Coordinate with all departments to implement Pantau Gambut activities in accordance with the organization's approved planning documents.
- Foster a culture of excellence and effective collaboration within teams and across all Pantau Gambut departments.
- Cultivate a collaborative, evidence-based, and mutually reinforcing work culture throughout the organization.
- Actively participate as a management team member, contributing to Pantau Gambut's development in line with the organization's strategy.
Research Planning and Management
- Develop short- and long-term research agendas and strategies relevant to peatland protection and restoration, which support Pantau Gambut's vision and mission.
- Design and lead research focusing on (including but not limited to): environmental, social, economic, legal, cultural, and other areas intersecting with peat issues in Indonesia.
- Oversee data analysis and research results validation processes to ensure quality and accuracy.
- Manage and update the Pantau Gambut study repository.
Team Management
- Develop work plans and budgets for research programs based on Pantau Gambut's Strategic Plan, aligning with program design, donor commitments, and Pantau Gambut’s operational guidelines.
- Lead the entire research process—from conceptualization, methodology, data collection, and management, to reporting.
- Monitor and analyze new issues and emerging trends, including political, scientific, social, economic, and legal developments, to ensure Pantau Gambut can respond effectively, strategically, and relevantly, and to support research concepts and results.
- Review budget utilization and ensure efficiency and compliance with internal policies.
- Regularly prepare analysis and research reports on program results, adhering to organizational planning and other organizational needs.
- Systematically administer and document all research processes and results.
- Perform other research department management tasks as directed by the National Coordinator.
Communication and External Relations
- Cultivate relationships and foster communication with external parties involved in research and investigation, including research institutions, universities, local, national, and international non-governmental organizations, and government agencies.
- Actively disseminate research results to media, volunteers, activists, government, and non-governmental organizations to promote the achievement of organizational goals.
- Actively represent Pantau Gambut in stakeholder meetings—including those with business, scientific, and government sectors, the broader environmental community, the media, and other public events—under the National Coordinator's direction, to strengthen Pantau Gambut's profile and credibility.
Fundraising
- Assist the National Coordinator in lobbying and negotiating to secure resource support for the Pantau Gambut.
- Identify funding opportunities and develop research proposals relevant to the organization's strategic direction.
- Ensure research projects adhere to organizational guidelines and donor requirements.
Qualifications
- Minimum bachelor's degree in Forestry, Agriculture, Anthropology, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Environment, or related fields (Master's degree preferred)
- Minimum of 5 years of research experience, preferably in the NGO or development sector
- Strong understanding of research design, methodology, and research ethics principles
- Proficient in data analysis software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, SPSS, Stata, R, NVivo, etc.)
- Excellent writing, reporting, and communication skills
- Ability to lead activities and manage teams
- Committed to the NGO's vision and mission and able to work in a multicultural environment
- Fluent in English
- Willing to travel to project sites, including remote areas
